What is movingui veneer?

Movingui veneer is a thin slice of real wood, Distemonanthus benthamianus, native to West and Central Africa. Slicing it thin stretches one tree across many sheets, so a single log covers far more surface than the same wood sawn into solid boards. Because it is genuine wood veneer, not a printed laminate, it sands, stains, and finishes exactly like the solid board it came from.

Movingui's bright yellow gold tone is its calling card, a color that reads warm and sunny rather than muted like many domestics. Interlocked grain is common in the species, which shows up as a subtle ribbon stripe effect when the wood is quarter sliced, adding movement to an already lively color.

Working and finishing tips

Movingui cuts cleanly with a sharp razor knife and presses with standard wood glue or contact cement. Its interlocked grain, especially on quarter sliced sheets, can tear out if cut against the grain direction, so test a scrap corner first.

As with many tropical species, wear a dust mask when sanding, a small number of woodworkers find exotic wood dust irritating. A clear finish keeps the yellow gold tone bright and true.

• Interlocked grain can tear out. Quarter sliced ribbon figure is beautiful but needs careful cutting direction to avoid chipping.
• Dust can irritate some people. Standard precaution for any exotic species, use a mask and good ventilation.
• Color mellows slightly over time. The brightest yellow gold is at first cut; expect a gentle warming toward tan with age.
