Red gum wood veneer is one of North America's few domestic exotics. It comes from the American sweetgum tree (Liquidambar styraciflua), and the best cuts show a smoky gray-brown heartwood laced with dramatic charcoal streaks. What is red gum veneer?

Sweetgum grows across the eastern United States. The tree yields two very different looks. The pale, whitish sapwood is sold as "sap gum" and stays light and even. The mature heartwood is the prize: a smoky gray-brown, sometimes olive, streaked with charcoal. That figured red gum, with its bold darker streaks, is what most makers are after when they buy red gum veneer sheets.

Because the darker heartwood only forms in older trees, this gum wood veneer runs less common than plain sap gum. That is part of why it feels special in a finished piece.

The color range is the draw. Expect a smoky gray-brown ground shot through with irregular black streaks, sometimes almost ink-like. Quartersawn red gum shows a subtle ribbon stripe as the interlocked grain catches the light. The texture is very fine and uniform, with a soft natural luster that a clear finish brings right up.

Working and finishing tips

Cut it with a sharp veneer saw or a fresh razor knife against a straightedge. It glues cleanly with PVA or contact cement over a flat substrate. Sand lightly with fine grit and pull the dust before finishing. Oil, shellac, and clear coats all deepen the red gum tone and make the darker streaks pop. Go easy with stain, as noted above.

Best uses

Red gum has a long history in furniture and cabinetry, and it shines in smaller maker work too. It is a great pick for boxes and marquetry, where the streaks add drama, and for model building, where the fine grain reads well at small scale.
