What is teak veneer?

Teak veneer is a thin slice of real wood, Tectona grandis, native to South and Southeast Asia and now widely grown on managed plantations around the world. Slicing it thin stretches one tree across many sheets, so a single log covers far more surface than the same wood sawn into solid boards. Because it is genuine wood veneer, not a printed laminate, it sands, stains, and finishes exactly like the solid board it came from.

Teak reads as a warm, golden brown with a soft natural sheen that comes from the oils inside the wood itself. Grain is usually straight with an occasional gentle wave, and the texture has a slightly coarse, tactile quality that feels different from a domestic hardwood the moment you touch it. Most of what we stock is plantation grown, giving a fairly consistent color and figure sheet to sheet.

Working and finishing tips

Teak cuts cleanly with a sharp razor knife and presses flat without much trouble. The one thing to plan around is its natural oil content: wipe the bonding surface with a solvent like acetone before gluing, or the oils can weaken the bond. Once prepped, standard wood glue or contact cement both work well.

Teak looks best under an oil finish, which plays to its natural character, though a wipe on poly also works if you want a slightly more protected surface.

Honest cautions.

• Natural oils resist glue. Wipe the surface with a degreasing solvent before bonding or you risk a weak joint.
• Coarse texture needs extra sanding attention. Take it up through the grits rather than skipping stages, or the surface can look uneven under a clear finish.
• Color varies by source. Plantation teak can run lighter or more uniform than old growth teak in vintage furniture, plan your color expectations accordingly.

Most teak on the market today, including what we stock, comes from managed plantations rather than old growth forest, which is a real shift from decades past. It is not currently CITES listed. Slicing it into veneer stretches a genuinely valuable tree across many more projects than solid lumber ever could.
