What is wenge veneer?

Wenge veneer is a thin slice of real wood, Millettia laurentii, native to Central Africa. Slicing it thin stretches a genuinely scarce tree across many sheets, so a single log covers far more surface than the same wood sawn into solid boards. Because it is genuine wood veneer, not a printed laminate, it sands, stains, and finishes exactly like the solid board it came from.

Working and finishing tips

Wenge cuts cleanly with a sharp razor knife and presses with standard wood glue or contact cement. A clear finish is usually all it needs, the natural color does the work.

Honest cautions.

• Dust and splinters can irritate. Wenge has a well known reputation for causing skin and respiratory irritation in some woodworkers due to very fine splinters and dust. Wear a mask, work gloves, and good dust collection when handling raw edges.
• Supply is genuinely limited. Wenge is listed by the IUCN as Endangered in parts of its range due to past over harvesting. We source it carefully and in modest quantities, and it is exactly the kind of species where veneer's efficiency, stretching one log across many projects, matters most.
• Open grain needs a filler for a glass smooth finish. Its coarse texture can telegraph through a thin finish coat without one.
