What is padauk veneer?

Padauk veneer is a thin slice of real wood, African padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii), native to West and Central Africa. Slicing it thin stretches one vividly colored tree across many sheets, so a single log covers far more surface than the same wood sawn into solid boards. Because it is genuine wood veneer, not a printed laminate, it sands, stains, and finishes exactly like the solid board it came from.

Fresh cut padauk is genuinely one of the most vivid natural colors in woodworking, a bright orange red that looks almost dyed even though it is entirely natural. That intense color darkens over months of light and air exposure into a deep reddish brown, still handsome, just less shocking than the moment it was cut. Grain is generally straight with a moderate, even texture.

Working and finishing tips

Padauk cuts and presses well with a sharp razor knife and standard wood glue or contact cement. One well known quirk: its reddish dust gets everywhere and can stain light colored surfaces and clothing, so protect your bench and wear something you do not mind getting dusty.

A clear oil finish is standard, and a UV inhibiting topcoat slows the color shift, though it will not stop it entirely.

Honest cautions.

• The vivid orange does not stay that bright forever. Padauk's fresh cut color mellows to a deep reddish brown within months of light exposure. A UV topcoat slows this but will not fully prevent it.
• Dust stains readily. Padauk's reddish dust can mark pale surfaces and fabric. Protect your workspace and clothing.
• Contrast pairing is dramatic. It pairs beautifully with pale woods like maple or holly, plan your palette with that contrast in mind.

• Bold accent inlay. A small amount of padauk makes an outsized visual statement.
• Box lids and statement panels. Its color carries a design on its own.

Sustainability and sourcing

African padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii) is not currently CITES listed, unlike some other Pterocarpus species. As with all our tropical species, we favor established suppliers who track sourcing carefully and can answer questions about origin.
