What is dyed veneer veneer?

Makers reach for colored wood veneer when natural species do not give them the shade they want. There is no naturally gray or true-blue tree, so we take a pale, even-grained wood and dye it. Poplar and koto take dye beautifully because they are porous and light to start, which lets the color soak in evenly.

Because the dye is pushed through under pressure, the color is consistent face to back. Trim an edge and you will not see a white core. That through-and-through color is the whole point of dyed veneer, and it is why these sheets hold up to shaping and sanding.

Working and finishing tips

Cut dyed veneer with a sharp knife and a straightedge, the same as any veneer. It glues down with PVA, contact cement, or urea formaldehyde. For inlay and marquetry, its through-color means you can sand flush without losing the shade.

Test your finish on a scrap first. Once you have sealed against bleed, dyed veneer takes clear coats well and the color pops. Lacquer and shellac are safe bets; add the shellac washcoat if you are set on water-based poly.
